What do you need to begin?
First and foremost you need to have CONFIDENCE in
your craft. You got a lot of haters in the game... What kind of equipment should you have?
First off you need some type
of sequencing capability for music production and DAW for recording vocals, editing, and mixing. Now a days you will see a
lot of software based programs that can deliver the sound (maybe not the punch), but definitely the sound (Fruity Loops for
beat makers, Logic. Protools, Soundtrack, Acid, Cubase, etc.). Whatever is going to define your sound (sets you apart and
makes you money). In reality - Most of it has to do with the Producer/Artist in you. I have recently heard some songs that
were done on a Casio keyboard (go figure)!
What will it cost ?
Depending on what your tastes are - It can vary anywhere
from a couple of thousand dollars, to roughly $20,000 (to get started). How should you assemble your
CD of tracks?
I
think that I might have been one of the first producers to put everything on my Ipod. This was in, or around 2000 in NY.
Nowadays, everybody is using their ipods or mp3 players. But on CD? ....I normally put my best 10-20 songs/instrumentals on
the CD. Also try to arrange the CD in male songs, female songs, instrumentals, etc.
How many tracks should your CD contain?
Again, anywhere from your best 10-20. If you
can't get their interest within that amount, you're pretty much just wasting time. How can you begin
getting paid for your tracks?
Whew!
Just starting off? With no track record? The industry is tough!!!! For a lot of 'cats' it's a catch-22.
At the same time -You can't do nothing for free!! Then again, if you're not a proven or established producer,
you almost have to - just to get the song placed. 9 times outta 10, it comes down to how badly the label/artist
wants the record. Then once your record is out and proven, you can start charging. -Get Your Hustle
On...
And what should you charge?
For a new producer, with
no track record? Anywhere from free to about $5,000, but you can always negotiate your points on the back end. Depending
on your sales of singles/album, you will be placed in a category of production (A, B, C, or D producer) Based on your category
is where you will see the escalation of your fees/advances. I have seen advances/fees range from nothing, all the way
up to $150,000. Of course the industry isn't buying into the high priced fees anymore. So, Get Your Hustle On...
What are innovative ways to get your
tracks placed on albums by established artists?

Who should you send your CD to?
