Music Managers – Make a Plan (Part 9)

As mentioned earlier, a personal manager will be the main person that will normally help you put your plan together. Once this is done, you and your manager can turn "the plan" into actions.

"If you want to know your future - look into your present actions"
-Chinese proverb

Here are just a few of the many duties and actions a manager can assist you with:

·          Helping you to get your image, bio, and media package together

·          Arranging photo sessions and putting you with the right photographers

·          Helping you to select songs

·          Helping you get the right producer or production situation

·          Getting you in a studio to record your music

·          Finding featured vocalists and musicians for your project

·          Getting potential labels, publishers, radio stations, club djs, music directors for TV, gaming industry and/or film projects to check out your music package.

·          Setting up agents and promoters to get you booked for performances

Can Managers Book Gigs & Shows?

Even though most books and resource guides might tell you that your manager isn't the one to get you gigs; that a talent or booking agent is used for that, I can tell you from my own personal knowledge and professional experience, managers will go out there (whether they're suppose to or not) and book you gigs too. Now yes, talent agents are the one's licensed and are actually monitored and regulated to do the whole booking thing, but I have never met a manager that didn't also do some type of bookings at some point for their artist(s), especially in the beginning.

Your manager will also play a role in securing your other interests, like music publishing, endorsements, television, and possibly film work. He or she essentially is the most important person that's going to be out there on the grind, planning and helping you put your marketing and publicity campaigns together. This is why it's so important to have a manager who's on-point! After all, most times it will be your manager who will be professionally representing you to the rest of the music industry and the entertainment business world.
