Music Managers - Artist Management for the Music Business Essentially, a music manager is the main person or company that will guide, counsel, develop and direct your music career. Managers are your key negotiator, and representative to the music industry. The majority of managers will assist you with your image, bio, photos, stylists, song selection, producers, and work hand in hand with any and all opportunities from music, to endorsements, to working with booking agents for live events. Having someone interested in managing you is good, but it is always best that you do your homework and research the music manager or management company interested before you make any decisions. Find out what acts the manager is currently representing, and/or has represented in the past. Check whether the management has had some success with artists in the past. If they have, they most likely will have a good idea of what it takes to be successful regarding talent as they take on new clients. Ask questions about his or her know-how when it comes to the particular deals and opportunities you are seeking, i.e. gigs, record deals, production work, writing placements, etc. Note: When asking questions, please use courtesy and respect. There is nothing wrong with getting to know more about the potential manager, especially when you are new to all of this - but you really need to do it with tact. Regardless on the genre of music, from hip hop, gospel, pop, r&b, christian, or rock, you have a vision for where you want to see yourself in the future. You're also willing to work harder than you've ever worked before in your life when the door of opportunity opens. When you are ready, and someone asks to see you perform live, have a show put together and a location where they can go see you perform, whether it's in your garage, basement, a rehearsal hall, church, or a club. When you're ready, you should be able to put on a performance right then and there, and it will be great. This will make a professional take a look at you, because you're confident, creative, and charismatic. You have your act together when the door opens for you. You need to be READY!
